Did you know that the Santa Cruz Art League is home to a theater as well as a gallery?

The Broadway Playhouse is our cozy blackbox theater, located just across the lobby from our gallery. This space is home to performances by many local theater and improv groups including our resident theater company, West Performing Arts.

Standing Down Straight

Saturday, October 25, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Join us in exploring the Standing Down Straight® Technique — a method of voice-and-movement training that helps us do the tasks of everyday living without causing strain or injury to the body. How? By guiding us to use life’s most effective and cost-free aid to healing and strengthening the body: gravity-directed relaxation. SDS® explains how gravity works with the human skeleton, in fact, how it is designed to use gravity to ground our bodies. We use less muscular effort when working or playing—whether at home, on the job, on the athletic field, or onstage. SDS® is a movement system made for truly every body.

Lunatic

Saturday, November 8, 7:00 pm
Sunday, November 9, 2:00 pm

“Lunatic is a delightful mix of poetry, music and physical theatre. Absurdity and surreality, visions and images, despair and hope, sadness and happiness all come together in this performance as in our life. "Lunatic" is based on Russian poetry of the early 20th century: Daniil Harms,  Alexander Vvedensky, Osip Mandelstam, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, Sasha Tchorny and Alexander Vertinsky. his poetry is absolutely present-days and reflects our lives perfectly: search of destiny, the pain of not fitting in society, the desire to connect with the universe, the fear of being honest, and the courage to be ourselves. Hundred years gap, half planet distance, different languages do not matter as we all go through the same things no matter when, where and how.  Lunatic comes in a 45 minute immersive experience mixed with electronic music, shade theater and dance.
